I made a little candle font this afternoon, and used it to make this mini-kit of birthday ages:



You can color it yourself, or just plop it on the page as is. Plus, there's a brush!

Wow, May 8th... I've really been remiss!

Causes:
1) Designing a new kit
2) MIL in town
3) Major tooth problems (so bad I don't even feel like scrapping today--what does that tell you! =(
4) Doggie sick, needs to go to lots of Dr. appointments. Poor doggie. =(

But I have been scrapping. Several of these will probably be used as illustrations for an article on typography in digital scrapping I'm writing for Scrapbook News & Review. Here are a couple more (I used my Botanical Overlays for both of these--I love how it makes the background just slightly textured!):



We took Allen to the dentist's (hmm, that guy is featuring large in my life right now!) for the first time, and the latter was pretty impressed that he'd already lost both bottom front teeth, and that the first one was half-way grown in already--apparently that's not supposed to happen until between 6 & 7! My little boy... *sigh*

I have a bunch of little birdies now, too--I can't decide if I want to dress them up, make elements that you can combine, or what. =)

Here's a fun one that's totally different from my usual style, with a bunch of elements (mostly by Katie Pertiet and Lynn Grieveson) combining into a sort of fantasy feel. I was influenced by Vinnie Pearce's house layout in the making of the window frame and curtain, too.



Oooooh, I just thought of a bright spot for the day: I'm getting my NEW COMPUTER today!! 500G of hard disk space! 4M of RAM! Oh frabjous joy, halloo, hallay! Perhaps I'll even be able to have Photoshop and Illustrator open at the same time now. =P

Channel Masks

Here's a layout I made from the new kit--I was worried that there wouldn't be enough "masculine" stuff, but it actually worked out quite well! Here's Allen getting down and dirty while we wait to pick up our doggie from chemotherapy... Fonts: nu-century-gothic and butterbrotpapier. Everything else from my "Floral Play" kit (coming soon at Aussie Scrapbooking). Journaling reads: "You've picked up this strange habit lately of filling your shoes with sand, and tossing them into the air. I get the benefit of the lovely patterns -- your eyes are squinched shut!"



And here's a tip:

To make the arrows, just "draw" with your lasso tool on top of the paper, copy, and paste! To repeat the exact same shape, which I did with the lighter paper beneath, you can create a new channel mask by clicking on the channels tab in your layers palette. With the selection still going (i.e., your ants are marching round and round), click on the icon at the bottom of the channels tab that looks like a little square with a circle in the middle. It will add another layer that looks entirely black, except for your selection which is white.

To get the same shape from a different piece of paper like I did, open the 2nd piece of paper, then drag that channel mask over to the paper. Go to the paper's channels tab, and click on your mask. Now you'll see the image turn black and white. Use your magic wand to select the shape you need, then click on the layers tab again so you can see your layers listed, and click on the paper layer. Ta-dah! Your selection is now right there, the same shape as in your other document! Copy the selection, go over to your main layout, and paste! It should create a new layer with the shape you wanted in the new pattern.

There are of course all kinds of handy uses for keeping selections in the channels masks, so it's a good trick to know!

I'm A Goof (among other things)

I *finally* finished the kit for Aussie Scrapbooking! They'll be "opening" next week, I think, and you'll need to register to get the kit. Not sure if registration is free, but the kit is!



I actually made two kits, but the first one wasn't what they'd expected--they were looking for a different feel, and we failed to communicate somewhere in there. Such is the life of a graphic designer! So the other one will be up in the shop after a few tweaks, I think. =) Oh, and I own "oohlalaartsy.com" now--whee! Though it still points to the WordPress blog at the moment... Oh, oh, and... my first banner!! (ETA: Which, for some reason, refuses to work through Blogspot, so I had to make it smaller and it looks yuck here. *grump*)

Arte y Pico

My friend Carolyn Summers awarded the Arte y Pico "prize" to me today. =)

Brenda Marks has been one of my greatest mentors since I started getting back into art after my long digression into academia. I always end up hobbling behind her little by little. I still owe her a doggie, too. =)

I discovered Gennine's blog through Julie K. in Taiwan, so I guess that's two with one swell foop...

Two people whom I admire muchly for their art and their personal qualities come from the digiscrapping world: Vinnie Pearce, and Lynn Grieveson. They fit the bill perfectly!

Layout Catch-Up

Man, have I been *busy* this week. It was the end of the month, so all my websites had to be updated, and our adorable lunkhead of a black lab--the one featured in so many of my "boy and his dog" layouts--has been diagnosed with lymphoma, which is of course terminal. Just depends on how much money we can afford to spend on chemotherapy; we're taking him to Oregon State on Monday to be evaluated. And, I've been asked to design a freebie kit for Aussie Scrapbooking, a site that should be opening by May 12th! I'm totally thrilled, and totally nervous. =) My usual dithering self, wot...

So, first up: a layout using one of my overlays, and a painted frame edge. I just discovered the large brushes included with PS CS2. Heh.

And this one was using several different photos in Kellie Mize's freebie from last week at Designer Digitals--she had this constellation of frames. I knew I wanted to use at least some squares of patterned paper (I used three, in the end), but placing the various photos of the fire pokers was kind of a serendipitous playfulness. This "technique" was a follow-up from a previous post where I'd also placed several photos into what used to be journaling strips--I find this severe cropping to be really useful when you have a ton of photos surrounding one event.



This last one took me crazy amounts of time because I made the peacock. But to make the peacock, I had to draw all the flourishes. As vectors. It's all good, because that way I can reuse them often, but man, the initial work is huge! The paisley is from Dover Clip Art, though--turned it into a stencil in Art Rage and painted it with metallic green and glitter. Oh, and I made the brads--those turned out ok--and the "bobby pin" which I think needs some serious attention, and the metallic stitching around the edges. =)



Next week's challenge at 2Peas is with art filters, so I'm looking forward to having fun with that!
